The game is simple:

 

You have a six-shot revolver.  One chamber is loaded, the rest are empty.  You do not know which is which.  If you put the gun to your temple and squeeze the trigger (and survive), you will receive $1 million.  You will receive a further $1 million for each successive squeeze of the trigger, up to a possible $5 million.  Or you could blow your brains out.

On the first squeeze, there is a 16.67% chance that you will die.

 

On the second squeeze, 20%.

 

Third squeeze, 25%.

 

Fourth squeeze, 33.33%.

 

Fifth squeeze, 50%.

 

And on the sixth squeeze, if you've somehow managed to survive up to now... well, you know.

thats 16.67% then ~33% then 50% then ~66% then 84% then 100%

No, because once you pull, those chambers are no longer counted. So, more like 1/6, then 1/5, then 1/4, then 1/3, then 1/2, then dead. This is the chance on each squeeze that the bullet will be there. I think you calculated the chance of you being dead by the time you got to that shot.

 

But given my luck, it'd be more like 6/6, 5/5, 4/4, 3/3, 2/2, 1/1. So, I would not play. lol.

Becuase the amount would increase exponentially each time I pulled, I would do it just once, to give me the best odds.

 

Since I know a bit about guns I'd cheat though.

Your math is all screwed up

 

Not at all.  On the first shot there is a 1 in 6 chance that you will get the bullet, or a 16.67% chance.  On the second shot, however, your chances increase, because you've already eliminated one chamber, so the bullet must be in one of the remaining five, for a 1 in 5 chance (20%).  After two squeezes you are down to the bullet being in one of four chambers (25% chance), then one of three (33.33% chance), two (50% chance), and, finally, one, for a 100% chance that you will blow your brains out.
